Getting Back on the Horse: A Journey of Resilience, Self-Connection, and Growth
Share
We all experience moments in life when we fall off the proverbial horse—times when life knocks us down, and we feel disconnected from ourselves or from the path we’ve been trying to stay on. Whether you’re navigating trauma recovery, rebuilding your self-esteem, or learning to meet your own needs, these setbacks often test us in ways that feel overwhelming. But, as challenging as these moments can be, they are also opportunities to grow, to rise again, and to get back on the horse.
What Does “Getting Back on the Horse” Really Mean?
For me, getting back on the horse is more than just a motivational phrase—it’s about the resilience we develop when we face adversity and keep moving forward. It’s about consistency, dedication, and the positive perspective we cultivate during the hardest times.
In a recent video I shared on TikTok (and soon to be posted on YouTube), I explored this idea further, breaking down the various aspects of personal growth, recovery, and self-connection. Here are a few of the key points I touched on:
- Meeting Your Own Needs: When you understand and prioritize your needs, you create a foundation for stability and growth. It’s about taking care of yourself, physically and emotionally, even when life feels tough.
- Building Characteristics Through Setbacks: Every fall from the horse provides us with the chance to develop strength, resilience, and self-awareness. These characteristics become the building blocks of our growth journey.
- Dedication and Consistency: Growth requires showing up for yourself, day after day. Consistency is key when you’re recovering from trauma or trying to get out of survival mode. It’s not about never falling off the horse, but about always getting back on.
- Alternative Coping Skills: Sometimes, the usual ways we cope just aren’t enough. That’s when it’s important to explore alternative coping skills—whether through mindfulness, creative outlets, or physical activity. Staying active can help you reconnect with yourself and stay grounded during challenging times.
Moments of Tightness Are Opportunities
In the video, I also talked about how moments of tightness—those tough, painful times—pose an opportunity. These moments can push you to either stay down or get back up. The choice is yours, and in choosing to rise, you build resilience and set the stage for your continued growth.
Trauma Recovery and the Development of Self
Trauma recovery isn’t linear, and it often requires us to step back, pause, and reconnect with who we are. It’s in this space that we develop knowledge of ourselves, our boundaries, and our needs. In essence, we enter a “cocoon” of self-development, and when we emerge, we do so with a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
Communicating Your Needs
Part of this growth journey is also learning how to effectively communicate your needs. Whether it’s with yourself or others, communicating your needs is an act of self-love. It’s an essential skill that helps you navigate relationships, work, and life with more confidence and clarity.
Final Thoughts
The process of building self-esteem, staying dedicated to personal growth, and embracing the moments when we fall off the horse is a journey we’re all on. It’s important to remember that every setback offers us a chance to get back up, stronger and more connected to ourselves than ever before.
